Start with the basics

Six first steps to explore your business idea

  1. Decide who you want to help

Write one sentence: I help [type of customer] with [problem] by offering [product or service]. Keep it specific enough that you can explain it to a friend.

  2. Find out whether people want it

Talk to potential customers. Ask how they deal with the problem now, what frustrates them and what they already pay for. Listen before spending on a launch.

  3. Write down the costs

List what you need to get started and what you would pay each month. Include materials, equipment and your time. Compare these costs with what you might charge.

  4. Understand the setup

Learn about business structures, keeping records and the rules that apply to your activity. GOV.UK explains how to set up a business. Ask a qualified adviser about your own tax or legal situation.

  5. Plan a small first offer

Choose one clear product or service to begin with. Decide what a customer receives, how much it costs and how you will deliver it. Check any relevant requirements before taking orders.

  6. Learn from your first customers

Ask what worked and what could be better. Keep track of money coming in and going out. Use what you learn to improve your offer before expanding.

A person to ask

What would you like help with?

You do not need a business plan. Tell us your idea or ask a question, even if you are still deciding what to do.

A couple of sentences is enough. If you do not have an idea yet, tell us what interests you. Please leave out sensitive financial or identity details.

We will reply by email. Sending a question does not subscribe you to marketing emails.

Common questions about starting a business
